Following our update earlier in September regarding the regeneration works to the High Street, Princess Way and Knoll Walk (access here), we are pleased to announce the contractor will start to mobilise their materials into Camberley on Friday 1 November 2019 and the works will start on Monday 4 November 2019.
Dyer and Butler are the Civil Engineering & Construction Contractors who have been selected by Surrey Heath Borough Council to complete the works.
The High Street will be closed to all vehicles apart from service and emergency vehicles from the roundabout at Pembroke Broadway/Portesbery Road up to St George’s Road from 4 November 2019 until 11 December 2020.
All businesses will be open as usual throughout the works and the High Street will be accessible to pedestrians. The contractors and council will work with businesses to minimise inconvenience and ensure access by service vehicles is maintained
The parking bays and taxi ranks on the High Street will not be available during the project but ranks be can be accessed on Pembroke Broadway, Princess Road West, Obelisk Way and Charles Street. Disabled parking bays are located on St Georges Road, High Street, accessed from St Georges Road, Park Street and Main Square Car Park.
We will be writing to residents on The High Street regarding parking arrangements during the works.
Knoll Walk will be closed to pedestrians for the duration of the project as it will be used as the site compound by Dyer and Butler to store materials and machinery.
The top part of the High Street – from St George’s Road up to London Road will be unaffected by these works. Improvements to this part of the High Street will be delivered in the future alongside the London Road scheme.
We will continue to share regular updates on the works as the project progresses. The works will take place in five phases – the first phase will be removing the existing road surface.
We are also planning to share more details about the project in a pop-up exhibition in The Square shopping centre. More details about this will follow soon
This project will deliver fantastic improvements to these areas, with better road and pavement surfaces, lighting, seating and planting – supporting Camberley town centre’s regeneration and long-term economic prosperity.
Surrey Heath Borough Council is committed to supporting and regenerating Camberley. SHBC’s investments have already seen the acquisition of The Square shopping centre, commencing its refurbishment programme within the first year of ownership. Followed by an ambitious set of projects to improve the roads, pavements and street scene.
A redundant office building has also been purchased to create 116 high quality town centre apartments, with proposals to re-deliver new commercial space.
Kier Property have been selected by SHBC as development partner for the London Road site. Situated fronting the London Road, opposite the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the 5.5-acre site has the potential to create a mixed-use development and improve the gateway to Camberley.
SHBC has signed a 25-year contract with Places Leisure to design, build and operate a new £22 million leisure centre. The new centre will feature new swimming pools, sport courts, fitness facilities and a café. The new centre is now in construction and is due to open in 2021.
The regeneration work is supported by a comprehensive events programme, grant schemes for independent businesses and cultural and enrichment projects to ensure Camberley is a key destination and experience.
