The first round of successful applicants has been announced in the SHBC COVID-19 Emergency Charity Grant Scheme.

Seven charitable organisations have been awarded a total of £30,700 to help deal with the impact of Coronavirus in the local community.

Successful applicants include High Cross Church, currently serving as a hub for voluntary community response group Surrey Heath Prepared, Disability Initiative, The Hope Hub and Surrey Heath Age Concern.

The full list of grants is below:

  • High Cross Church – £10,000 towards supporting Surrey Heath Prepared’s work in our community through food parcel/food bank provision and phone line support.
  • Disability Initiative – £7,200 towards outreach work supporting vulnerable shielded clients.
  • The Hope Hub – £6,000 towards continuing to deliver their range of crisis and empowerment services to the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless.
    Surrey Heath Age Concern – £6,000 towards delivering an extended telephone befriending service to the elderly.
  • Eikon Charity – £500 towards adapting the service to reach young people during this period.
  • Surrey Welfare Rights Unit – £500 towards their training service.
  • Surrey Care Trust – £500 towards mentoring and counselling service for young people.

Leader of SHBC, Cllr Alan McClafferty, said: “We are really pleased to be able to award these grants to charities doing such vital work in our communities in this time of Coronavirus. The speed at which the scheme has been set up, with grants awarded just two weeks later, is testament to the hard work of the officers involved.

“I’d like to thank all of the charities, voluntary and community groups working hard to support our Surrey Heath community at the moment, and encourage eligible organisations who may need some extra assistance at the moment to apply for the next round of grants from this scheme.”

SHBC launched the rapid response fund on 8 April to help smaller charitable organisations affected by the impact of Covid-19.

The scheme funds individual grants of up to £20,000 and is designed to retain the support within our community for those in the highest need. It is aimed at locally-based charities who have continued to operate and/or have specifically changed their service to support their at-risk clients.

Priority is being given to organisations who receive Revenue Grants from the Council.

The Council aims to make payments to successful organisations as soon as possible after the grant is awarded.
