The Square Camberley welcomed their first Makaton sign language storytelling session on Saturday 11th January.

To make sure no one misses out on the opportunity to enjoy their favourite stories, The Square has introduced Makaton as part of their free monthly storytelling sessions.

Makaton is a unique language program that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate and is as relevant today as ever. It is used extensively all over the UK in pre-schools, schools, centres, hospitals and clinics and in the homes of people with communication and learning difficulties and has been adapted for use in over 50 countries.

Recognising the importance of Makaton, The Square’s Marketing Manager, Joana Santos told us: “Makaton is becoming increasingly popular, with more than 100,000 children and adults using the signs and symbols to communicate, it’s therefore important that we recognise this and ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy our free storytelling sessions. We’ll be continuing to welcome Makaton Sign Language at each storytelling session, taking place here at The Square on the second Saturday of each month.”

2020 marks The Square’s second year of free storytelling sessions held at the centre, with many families praising The Square: “We love the sessions – it’s really helpful for improving kids learning and reading along with other skills (Painting colour identification)” Dr Ama Khalil

The Square works alongside local organisations The Creation Station to host the free event. A spokesperson for The Creation Station added: “Creative storytime makes children’s stories come alive with sensory and creative activities. It’s an opportunity to go on an imaginary journey together, listening to a story and making a keepsake to take home.”

Families can enjoy The Square’s storytelling sessions on the second Saturday of each month, alongside a creative activity.
